Animal protection organization calls to replace famous Groundhog Phil with robot

Animal advocates are calling guardians of predicting the weather, Punxsutawney Groundhog to let him resign and be replaced by a robot.

This week the organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) sent to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club letter with a statement that it is time to change a beloved American tradition.

«Every year on 2 February, Groundhog Day, Phil pulled out of the hole, being photographed with flashes of hundreds of people, around noise, and it is a great stress for him. In addition, the current living conditions do not allow him to dig and search for food, as do wild marmots. It’s not a good life for these animals,» wrote PETA President Ingrid Newkirk.

Phil lives in an enclosure with climate control in the territory of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club in Punxsutawney in Western Pennsylvania.

PETA has offered to use modern technologies and create a robot-Groundhog with artificial intelligence that can reliably predict the weather.

«Phil iSkin revived would be of interest to Punxsutawney, but it would make tradition far more progressive. Think about whether to change the annual tradition of your city in an innovative way!», the letter said PETA.

Organization for the protection of animals added that this «rebranding» will help return interest in the Groundhog Day and the youth.

«Now young people born into a world of terabytes and the observation of nocturnal rodent, which pulled out of the artificial holes, not even worth a text message,» said PETA.
