Russia violates human rights in Crimea – UN

On Monday, the UN said that Russia had committed «repeated and serious» human rights violations in Crimea after the seizure of territory three years ago. This includes arbitrary arrests, torture and imposition of Russian citizenship to inhabitants of the Peninsula.

Investigators of the United Nations have documented evidence of arbitrary detentions, torture and kidnappings. They argue about the abuse of power by the Federal security service, Russian police and armed forces.

UN staff reported extrajudicial violence, at least on one Pro-Ukrainian activist. Investigators also became aware of dozens of abductions from 2014 to 2016. At least 10 people still missing. The UN claim that arbitrary arrests continue to occur regularly and, it seems, intended to instill fear and suppress opposition.

«The frequency and severity of these human rights violations together with a lack of accountability created an atmosphere of impunity which encourages further perpetuation of such violations,» – said Fiona Fraser, the head of the investigative mission in the Crimea.
