Australia voted for gay marriage

Celebration, happy faces, songs and tears – that’s what prevails today in many cities across Australia. And all because November 15 was announced the results of a survey that has historical significance: Australians overwhelmingly voted for the legalization of gay marriage.

All of Australia for a long two months to decide the fate of same-sex marriage. And finally, after several months of controversial debate, and for numerous campaigns both for and against changes in the legislation, the majority of Australians decided to support the change.

The chief statistician of Australia David Kalish said that in support of gay marriage voted 7.8 million, or approximately 61% of the total population. At the same time, approximately 4.9 million of the respondents (38%) did not support the idea of legalizing same-sex marriage.

And despite the fact that it was only national survey that does not oblige the government to change the legislation, the Prime Minister of Australia Malcolm Turnbull has appealed to the citizens a speech, and urged to ensure that same-sex marriage was legalized before Christmas.

«They said «Yes» to justice, they said «Yes» to consciousness, they said «Yes» of love. And now it’s time for Australian Parliament to deal with the matter,» he told reporters.
