«The Bosnian butcher» Ratko Mladic is sentenced to life imprisonment for genocide

Former chief of staff of the army of Republika Srpska Ratko Mladic, was found guilty in organization of the genocide and committing other atrocious acts during the Bosnian war of the 1990-ies.

In the world media Mladic was nicknamed «the Bosnian butcher» for the massacres of Muslims (Bosniaks) in Srebrenica during the siege of Sarajevo, where, in total, killed more than 18 thousand people, that was the most brutal murder in Europe since world war II.

In 2012, the international Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), who is fighting for justice against crime, has filed the first charges.

During the four-year marine litigation it became clear that the Serbian military under the leadership of Mladic raped Bosnian women and girls were beaten and kept in appalling conditions of prisoners, terrorized the local inhabitants and destroying houses and mosques.

Today, 22 November, the Hague Tribunal has recognized Mladic guilty to 10 of 11 items, and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Victims and their relatives watched the verdict in the memorial centre. The group mothers of Srebrenica admitted that they are partially satisfied with the decision of the court. Some relatives said that Mladic deserves a harsher sentence.

The lawyer of the Serbian General said they intend to appeal the court’s decision. 74-year-old Mladic was not present during the verdict. It was removed from the courtroom because he began shouting something in my defence.
