Russia was forbidden to participate in the Olympic Winter games in 2018

The international Olympic Committee eliminated the national team of Russia of the Winter Olympic games in 2018, which will be held in the South Korean city of Pyeongchang.

While Russian officials are forbidden to be present at the event; the flag of the country will not be at the opening ceremony; and none will hear the words of the anthem of the Federation «Russia — our sacred state».

Any athletes from Russia, who will receive special permission to participate in the competition, will be dressed in uniform, which will not be of Russian symbolism. In addition, all official records in the framework of these competitions will always be to show that Russia did not win any medals.

Such punishment, the international Olympic Committee ruled today, 5 December, after a lengthy investigation, which confirmed that many Russian athletes, including gold medalists, used doping.

The investigation of the IOC under the leadership of Denis Oswald revealed that Russia has created a special scheme, which was substituted by more than 100 urine samplesto hide evidence of the use of steroids by Russian athletes. We also learned that all misconduct was known in the Ministry of sport of the Russian Federation and the FSB.

As reported by the NY Times, the exclusion of the country from the Olympic games in connection with the doping scandal is unprecedented. Earlier, the state excluded from participation, but most often for political reasons or because of discrimination.

For example, Germany a few times, not participated in competition for the outbreak of war in 1920, 1924 and 1948. And in 2000 the national team of Afghanistan is not allowed to participate, because the country is prohibited to play sports of women, which was interpreted as gender discrimination.
