Residents of the village of Novgorod in the Donetsk region of Ukraine has proposed to rename the settlement in new York.

According to an UNIAN correspondent, the head of the Donetsk regional state administration (RSA) said it was ready to support such a decision.

«If people have a desire that is justified and spoke together among themselves, it will be considered and accepted positively,» said Paul Kirilenko.

After agreeing to rename the RSA, this issue should be considered by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

According to the website «Ethnographic Donbass», the village new York was founded by the Germans-Mennonites, invited into the Russian Empire by Catherine II.

According to one version, one of the first entrepreneurs in the settlement — Unger – made in the XIX century to the United States.
