According to the researchers, the pig was injected with an anesthetic to reduce «anxiety and stress». They explained that they used as a test of these animals, as their anatomical structure was «similar» to the structure of the human children.

Scientists insisted that they had followed the guidelines of the U.S. on the use of laboratory animals, and said that their study was approved by the ethics Committee. Pigs and other animals had really been used in crash tests in the United States, but this practice was discontinued in the 1990-ies.

Zachary Toliver from the group of animal rights PETA has called the practice «cruel» and «unjustified».
