A woman who sent Trump a letter with ricin was arrested at the US border

A woman suspected of sending an envelope of ricin to Donald Trump was arrested at the US-Canadian border, law enforcement sources told The Associated Press.

The letter was intercepted at a government facility that checks the president's correspondence earlier this week — before it reached the White House.

The woman was taken into custody by U.S. customs and border officials near Buffalo as she tried to enter the States, officials said. A pistol was also found with her.

The name of the detainee has not yet been disclosed. She is expected to face federal charges.

This is not the first time that letters have been sent to US presidents with toxic substances inside. In 2014, a Mississippi resident was sentenced to 25 years in prison for sending ricin letters to ex-President Obama and other officials. In 2018, a Navy veteran was arrested on similar charges: this time, Trump and members of his administration were the target of the man.
