In New York, for the first time in 114 years, there will be no mass festivities in Times Square on New Years

Every year, thousands of people gathered on the night of December 31 in Times Square, but in 2020 things will be different. The legendary ball will descend exactly at midnight, but you can watch it exclusively online.

“One thing will never change: it's the countdown and New Years celebration at midnight on December 31st. This year there are new and improved virtual, visual and digital entertainment that compensates for any limitations of live concerts or events that take place in Times Square, ”said Tim Tompkins, President of the Times Square Alliance.

Talking to the New York Post, Tompkins added that while there will be some «social distancing events» in Times Square, the area is primarily for broadcasters and will be cordoned off by police.

«There will be a very limited number of people in Times Square to provide live coverage, but there will not be a huge crowd of onlookers.»

It has not yet been decided what live performances are planned during the celebration and concerts. However, according to Tompkins, «several celebrities» will be invited.

Jeff Strauss, President of Countdown Entertainment, which co-produced the event with the Times Square Alliance, said:

«We will miss everyone this year, but you can still join us for the 2021 New Years in Times Square — much the same as before.»
