A man fell from the Devil's Cauldron cliff and crashed to death while posing for a selfie

Stephen Gastelum fell over 100 feet into the Pacific Ocean from a cliff in Oregon known as the Devil's Cauldron. Police say he posed for photographs in Oswald West State Park.

The man fell and crashed to his death as he posed for a photo climbing a tree on the edge of a cliff.

Police say a branch broke underneath, causing Gastelum, 43, to collapse. The Coast Guard and firefighters launched a rescue operation, but the man could not be saved. Rescuers dragged his body ashore.

Gastelum was taken to Tillamook Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Oregon State Police are currently investigating the incident and claim that he posed for a photo minutes before the fall.

More than 250 people have died trying to take the perfect selfie, according to a study published in 2018.

Of the reported fatalities, 72.5% were in men and only 27.5% in women, with men being more prone to risky behavior during filming.

The average age of people who died trying to take selfies was 22.9 years. In total, the reported age of the victims ranged from 10 to 68 years.
