A Massachusetts mother warns of the dangers of lawn mowers after a horrific accident in which her 3-year-old daughter lost her left foot and part of her leg.

Sara Reardon is still recovering from an incident on August 22, when young Abigail was at her father's house in Lakeville, WHDH news channel reported.

“As devastated as I am by what happened to her, I'm kind of glad it didn't end worse. — Reardon admits to the publication — But it could.

According to Sarah, Abigail was playing on the street with her 6-year-old sister Alexa and ran behind the lawnmower, which was just beginning to move backwards — running over the child's leg. The baby was immediately taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, where she underwent five surgeries, but her leg still had to be amputated to mid-calf.

According to a family friend on GoFundMe, Abigail still has a number of surgeries ahead of her — not to mention that she will have to regularly change her dentures as she gets older for the next 15 years. Elder sister Abby is also grieving over the incident in front of her eyes and needs visits to a psychoanalyst.

While Abigail is preparing for the next operation, Sarah decided to tell her other parents about the incident, hoping that this will help to avoid new accidents.

“While the lawn mower or tractor is operating outside, do not let the children play outside,” she emphasizes.

“If Abby’s story saves even one more child, then I’ll be happy to share it.”
