Since older people are at risk and more likely to experience complications from coronavirus, experts urge them to be extra careful — and strongly recommend not leaving home without a good reason. For a 102-year-old former teacher from Chicago, this was the reason for the 2020 election, and she bravely went out to vote by mail.

Beatrice Lumpkin took security precautions by wearing a protective suit before taking her ballot to the mailbox. After that, the Chicago Teachers Union, in which Beatrice was previously a member, shared a photo of the woman on social networks — and the picture instantly went viral, collecting more than 4.6 thousand likes.

Lumpkin, who started voting 80 years ago, told the WBBM that the first presidential candidate she voted for was Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1940. Since then, the woman has never missed the elections.

By voting for one candidate or another, Beatrice explains, she pays tribute to the struggle for the rights of women who could not yet vote when she was born. But there is another reason for 2020.

“These are the most important choices in my life. Says Lampkin. «The future of democracy is at stake.»
