Nobel Peace Prize awarded to UN World Food Program

On Friday, the UN World Food Program was awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize for the work the organization has done to prevent hunger around the world, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.

“The need for international solidarity and multilateral cooperation is more evident than ever,” said Berit Reiss-Andersen, Chair of the Nobel Committee, announcing the winner of the Oslo Prize.

She added that the organization will receive an award «for its services in the fight against hunger.»

“The World Food Program has been working hard in a pandemic. The crisis hit communities and countries with fragile infrastructure and food insecurity much harder than other communities. ”

The organization has more than 17 thousand employees worldwide, working in more than 80 countries. Thus, every month, millions of people in Syria and Yemen rely on WFP to survive.
