60-year-old surfer was killed in Australia by a 10-foot (more than 3 meters) large white shark .

Rob Pedretti was attacked by a shark on Sunday around 10 : 8:00 p.m. off the coast of northern New South Wales, Australia.

According to the rescue organization Surf Life Saving NSW, other surfers tried to fight off the man from the great white shark and hauled him ashore.

“The actions of these people were nothing short of heroism, they were trying to save this gentleman,” said New South Wales Police Officer Matt Kehoe.

According to NSW Ambulance Inspector Terence Savage, the victim was given first aid, but, unfortunately, it was not possible to save him — the man died on the beach.

“When you get a call about a shark attack, you will never know the severity of the injuries until you won't be there, ”added Savage. “The doctors did their best to try to save his life.”

According to the authorities, the photos confirm that it was a great white shark who attacked the surfer. This is the third deadliest shark attack in Australia this year.

In January, a shark killed a diver off the coast of Western Australia, and a 23-year-old wildlife worker died in April from a shark attack on the Great Barrier Reef .
