Mikheil Saakashvili was deprived of Ukrainian citizenship

Today, July 26, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has signed a decree on the termination of Ukrainian citizenship to Mikhail Saakashvili, who personally awarded the former President on may 29, 2015.

The next day Saakashvili took the post of head of the Odessa regional state administration, and in December of the same year the President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili was deprived of his Georgian citizenship. Neither in Georgia nor in Ukraine dual citizenship is not allowed.

Initially, the news about the loss of Saakashvili and his Ukrainian citizenship has spread by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Igor Mosiychuk, who reported about it at himself in Facebook.

Later there was confirmation on the official website of the State migration service of Ukraine.

“Materials concerning Mikhail Saakashvili the General Prosecutor of Ukraine, received from the Georgian side, processed by the State migration service of Ukraine, directed to the Commission on citizenship issues under the President of Ukraine, and in due course considered at the meeting of the Commission”, – is written on the Agency’s website.

On the basis of the conclusions of the members of the Commission, the President of Ukraine shall make the decision on the loss of citizenship of Ukraine by an individual. Apparently, the arguments of the Commission seemed Petro Poroshenko convincing.

According to the national legislation in Ukraine to be deprived of citizenship only on three grounds:

  • voluntary acquisition of citizenship of another state;
  • the acquisition of citizenship of Ukraine as a result of deception, the deliberate submission of false information or forged documents;
  • voluntary entry into the military service of another state.
  • Apparently, if Saakashvili was involved in the second item, because, according to news Agency TSN, 2015, in her questionnaire about citizenship, Saakashvili pointed to the “false evidence that he is not under investigation in Ukraine or abroad”.

    Recall that in 2014, ruled Georgia for two presidential terms of Mikhail Saakashvili had imposed the arrest in absentia in the case of abuse of power.

    At its Odessa office Mikhail Saakashvili lasted less than a year and a half: in November of 2016 he resigned, after which Petro Poroshenko signed the corresponding decree about his dismissal and raised the issue of deprivation of Ukrainian citizenship policy.

    Then Saakashvili said that he was leaving his post because of the inability of the Ukrainian political leaders to curb corruption in the state.

    Interestingly, in 2005, John McCain and Hillary Clinton nominated Saakashvili for the Nobel peace prize for his “historic role” in Georgia. However, he didn’t get it.

    At the moment, still remains unknown whether Saakashvili any nationality. For example, his wife Sandra Roelofs is a subject of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
