The gunmen shot the bus with Christians in Egypt: dozens dead and wounded

Gunmen shot dead a bus and a truck carrying a group of Coptic Christians in the monastery of St. Samuel in the province of Minya, located in the southern part of Egypt is 220 km from Cairo. During the attack , 26 people died (according to some 28 people) and wounded 25 others.

Press Secretary of the Ministry of internal Affairs of the country said unidentified gunmen arrived in three cars.

Security forces launched an operation to capture the attackers, installing on a deserted road dozens of checkpoints and patrols entering.

The Supreme Imam of the Cairo al-Azhar mosque, a 1,000-year-old center of Islamic learning in Egypt, said that the attack was aimed at destabilizing the country.

«I urge Egyptians to unite in the face of this brutal terrorism,» said Ahmed al-Tayeb, being at the moment in Germany.

Coptic Christians, comprising about 10% of Egypt’s population (about 92 million people), suffered a series of deadly attacks in recent months.

About 70 people have been killed since December as a result of the bombing of churches in Cairo, Alexandria and Tanta.

Responsibility for these attacks was taken by the ISIS.
