Residents of East Village are tired of the «boozy» brunches

Robert Halpern, a lawyer and a permanent resident of the East Village, went to court to force officials to stop giving out so many licenses for liquor in his district.

Most residents prevent endless brunches, the proposed bars and restaurants, which attract crowds of young people. During these brunches, a special offer in which you can pay a set price for getting unlimited access to alcohol. According to the lawsuit, such action is prohibited by law, Halpern argues that they contribute to the «deterioration of the neighborhood».

The lawsuit also says that in the East Village currently, there are 679 of licenses for the sale of alcohol, and officials in the relevant management continue to give them further. In 2016, was approved 305 new licenses, and in 2017 — 243.

Halpern’s main argument is that «alcoholic» brunch prohibited by the regulation against the sale of unlimited alcohol for a set time for a set price. The lawyers of the office for the issuance of licenses previously stated that the «special brunch» are considered special events, therefore they are not subject to this provision.

In its lawsuit, Halpern reinforces accusations with examples, indicating 17 brunchesavailable in the East Village, including an event in the Cloister Cafe «offers free cocktails, such as «Mimosa», «Screwdriver» and a Bloody Mary, beer, wine and sandwiches.»

It is possible that Halpern will succeed with his claim, the authorities closed down amusement shop in the East Village, and it means that you have a little time to go there for Sunday brunch. Carpe diem, gentlemen.
