A year-old baby died after his father decided to resort to «folk remedies» for the treatment of bronchitis. Mordecai Halpern was found unconscious in his home on East Second Street, between Cortelyou Road and Ditmas Avenue in Kensington about 5.15 am on Thursday.
The child was often sick with bronchitis and was coughing badly. So when he once again fell ill, my father decided to treat his own «proven methods». He gave the baby a mixture of lemon juice, sugar and water, and then took him by wheelchair to the bathroom. There the father turned on the hot water in the shower and closed the door to the room filled with steam. While the procedure lasted, the man decided to relax a bit, but fell asleep and slept until morning.
In the morning, finding the boy unconscious, the man called paramedics. The child was immediately sent to the hospital, but the hospital never arrived. Doctors pronounced him dead.
Visible signs of injuries the child had. The true cause of death of the baby will establish a forensic scientist.
