The deadliest fire in a quarter century caused the death of 12 people in the Bronx

Fire in new York occurred on 28 December, the authorities have dubbed the most deadly in the last 25 years.

The fire broke out about 7 p.m. on the first floor of 5-storey residential brick home in one of the boroughs of the Bronx, known as «Malka Italy», near the zoo. The flames quickly began to spread to the upper floors. The fire killed 12 people, including a baby. Four more victims are in critical condition. 12 people were rescued by firefighters. At the moment the fire is extinguished.

At a special press conference, city fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the cause of the fire is not yet established, the investigation is ongoing. The victims were discovered on different floors of the building. It is people aged 1 to 50 years. On the fire place worked 160 firefighters.

«We are here, in place of unspeakable tragedy. In the midst of the holiday season, families all gather together. However, tonight, in the Bronx, some families that were just ripped,» said Blasio.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire spread so quickly that residents of the burning house were forced to run out into the street not dressed in shorts and t-shirts. They don’t even have time to grab any necessary personal items, including documents.

At the request of the mayor, «the number of victims is not final and could increase.»
