Police are hunting a mother of a baby abandoned in a plastic bag in the woods

Georgia authorities are searching for the mother of a newborn baby, found wrapped in a plastic bag, which was dumped in a wooded area of Cumming, about 40 miles from Atlanta.

Residents of nearby houses were unloading the car after a trip they took in the evening when I heard a noise coming from a deserted wooded area. First, they decided that the sounds the animals produce. But after some time, they have doubts in this.

Kyle Ragatz told WSB: «We took flashlights and circled area on the car because it was not very similar to animal.» They went into the woods and went toward the sound, until the pile of leaves and sticks, where he saw a baby wrapped in a plastic bag.

Sheriff Ron Freeman told reporters: «do Not expect to hear of a child in the forest. Thank God that they went there to check what it is.»

They called 911. As it turned out, a newborn girl was just a few hours old, said Freeman. He added that the police and physicians who participated in the rescue of the child, wanted to give her a name because I felt that «she is one of them.» So instead of the traditional for such cases, Jane DOE, the local hospital Forsyth County hospital called her India.

India is currently under medical supervision and Department of Family and Children’s Services is likely to give her guardianship, told the Freeman.

Law enforcement officials are «combing» the area, browse the video from surveillance cameras and are asking the public for help, hoping people can shed some light on how India got there.

If it was left there intentionally, the perpetrator could face such charges as abandonment and cruelty to a child in the first degree.

But the police are not going to speculate on the allegations until they know what happened, said Freeman. First of all, they want to make sure that India and the woman who gave birth to her safe and healthy.
