During the celebration of Hanukkah man with a machete broke into the house of the Rabbi: 5 people injured

On Saturday, the seventh night of Hanukkah, late in the evening the man attacked the house of the Rabbi near the synagogue in the North of new York city. He stabbed five people and fled the scene by car, police said. The assailant arrested.

It seems that this attack was directed against the Jewish community, as well as the shooting at a kosher grocery store in new Jersey earlier this month.

The Jewish Council of public Affairs in the region of the Hudson valley (OJPACHV) wrote about the incident on Twitter:

«At 9:50 PM received a call about several people injured, 30 miles North of new York in the house of a Hasidic Rabbi. 5 patients with stab wounds, all the Hasidim were taken to local hospitals.»

«Two of the victims of the attack were taken to hospital in critical condition. His face was partially covered with a scarf, but the skin showed that he is African-American.»

OJPACHV reported that one of the victims — at least 6 wounds, while the fifth affected less than the other, cut on hand. The Council gave information about the fact that the assailant left, presumably in a grey Nissan Sentra with the number of HPT-5757. This has helped to detain the criminal. Detectives Rockland County and Ramapo police sent a team to pick up the suspect, who was arrested by NYPD. He was questioned in the 32nd district of the new York police Department. He was alone in the car during the arrest. Does not have a criminal record.

The police chief of Ramapo brad Weidel said a few hours later that the NYPD found the car and later arrested a suspect in the attack.

«We stand in solidarity with the Jewish community.»

The highest state officials, including Governor Andrew Cuomo and attorney General Letitia James, issued statements condemning the attack. According to official sources, the house belongs to Rabbi Chaim Rottenberg, next to the residence from the synagogue. Several state and local officials called the crime scene the synagogue.

Cuomo called the knife attack «a cowardly act» and instructed the police on offences against hate to investigate the incident.

«Posmolite me be clear: anti-Semitism and bigotry of any kind is contrary to our values of inclusiveness and diversity, and we are completely intolerant of such acts of hatred, the Governor said in a statement. In new York we will always unanimously to declare those who want to sow fear: you do not represent the people of new York and your actions will not go unpunished».

65-year-old Aaron Kohn was present during the attack.

«I prayed for my life,’ said Con. He started to attack people as soon as walked in. We did not have time to react. I watched as he walked in, pulled out a knife and began to attack. He was either a machete or a knife this size. When I saw it, then began to throw chairs and turn the tables to stop him.»

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin condemned the attack on Twitter, saying that we need collective effort to stop future incidents.

«Shocked and outraged by the terrible attack in NY, and I pray for the recovery of the wounded. Anti — Semitism is not only a Jewish problem and of course not only a problem of the state of Israel wrote to Rivlin on Twitter. We need to work together to counter this growing evil, which is a real global threat.»

This incident occurred only a month after man was wounded, going to the synagogue of Monsey. The victim in the November attack needed surgery. It is not known whether the arrested person suspect in the attack.

The Jewish community of new York was also concerned about the brutal attack on 10 December in North kosher supermarket in new Jersey. Then the shooting killed six people, including two murderers, a police officer and three people who were in the store. Attorney General of new Jersey Gurbir was Grewal said that the attack was caused by hatred of Jews and law enforcement.

The new York city police received at least six messages this week — and eight of 13 December — about a possible attack.

Immediately after the attack, the Rabbi and his followers gathered in the synagogue next to his house (where the attack happened) and continued with the celebration of Hanukkah.
