According to the American husband, his wife spent all her time in front of the TV watching news about the war in Ukraine. A woman with Russian roots was very worried that she could not fly to her mother, who remained at home. She wanted "to protect her from Putin's attack". After a few weeks of such a pastime, Natalya began to abuse alcohol. Russia's military invasion of Ukraine began to affect her mental state.

Shortly before the tragedy, Hitchcock persuaded her husband to buy "for survival" a supply of food, fuel, a camping stove and knives. Natalya's husband recalls that she was especially annoyed at not being able to see her parents in Russia. On March 30, a woman strangled 8-year-old Oliver and tried to drown her eldest 11-year-old son in the bathroom, but he managed to break free and run away. The boy woke up his father, who tried to save the child before the arrival of the ambulance and the police, giving him cardiopulmonary resuscitation. At that moment, the Russian woman was lying on the bed and stabbed herself in the chest, trying to commit suicide.

The police officers who arrived at the scene took Natalya to the police station, where she explained her action by her desire to protect the children. She was afraid that "people from the Russian government" would take them away from her. It seemed to her that everyone was looking at her as a spy, so Natalia wanted an "easy death" for their sons, so that the Russian troops would not mock them. Recently, Hitchcock did not sleep at night, fearing that at any moment they would come for her, and her children would be tortured.

According to the woman, the youngest son was especially vulnerable and weak. He wouldn't be able to defend himself if he was bullied. Therefore, she decided to kill him herself, alleviating his suffering. During the first speech in court, Natalya asked for forgiveness from her husband, with whom she had been married for 15 years, and said that she was sorry that she had done so. According to relatives, the couple loved their children very much, and the brothers were best friends. Hitchcock's parents were informed of the incident through an interpreter. Now the woman is charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. She is currently behind bars on $1 million bail.
