At the press conference, Garcetti said that the number of murders in the second largest city in the US last year fell 8.2%, while the number of rapes decreased by 12.4%. Cases of banditry was less than 8%, and crimes against private ownership — 2%.

«This is one of the safest periods in Los Angeles in our history,» said Michelle Moore, who took the post of chief of police last year.

In 1992, during the «epidemic» of crack cocaine in Los Angeles was committed 1092 of the murder. Garcetti and Moore compared last year’s statistics with the statistics of 1990-ies. According to Garcetti, since 1992 the number of crimes involving violence declined by 67%, while crimes against property — 60%. Moore also said that in 2018 1008 of the victims of the shooting was 48 less than in 2017, 169 less than in 2016, and 900 less than in 2007. The mayor and police chief believe that the decrease in the level of crime was influenced by the increase in officers, a greater number of street patrols and police intervention in gang activity.

Garcetti said that the statistics of crime deserves attention, given the population growth of Los Angeles. He also noted that in some other major U.S. cities, there were more murders than Los Angeles in 2018. In new York, was 289, in Chicago, more than 530, in Houston — at least 279, and in Philadelphia — more than 350.

Moore mentioned the importance of constant police intervention in gang activity, noting that 50% of all murders in Los Angeles are associated with criminal gangs. He also said that in Los Angeles in 2018, too many homeless people (about 3 million people) were victims of crime, and called it a «humanitarian crisis of our generation.»
