The Governor of new York Andrew Cuomo on Monday, June 17, after all, signed the law on the issuance of driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants shortly after the document was supported by state Senate (33 to 29).
Cuomo has repeatedly expressed support for the bill, but at the last moment, were concerned: he was concerned that information about undocumented immigrants, collected by the Department of state for registration of vehicles, can fall into the hands of Federal officials and to be used for immigration control.
«If you produce a driver’s license for persons who do not have documents, you must make sure that you do this so that the feds didn’t come the next day and not have access to this database absolutely the opposite intention,» said Cuomo.
In this regard, the Governor asked attorney General Barbara underwood to assess the risks. Soon the attorney General Letitia James assured that the document is legally justified.
«The bill is carefully designed and sufficiently protects those who apply for a driver’s license. If this bill is passed and challenged in court, we will actively protect him,» said James.
Supporters of this measure claim that the so-called the bill a «Green light» will provide more than 265 000 people to obtain the rights and to improve road safety, because the illegals will be forced to pass a driving test, get insurance and make annual inspections of vehicles.
«Today’s vote shows that we, the people of new York, committed to protecting the dignity and safety of all members of our community, — said the initiator of the bill, Senator Luis Sepulveda after the document was voted by 33 people. — We advocate for the rights of immigrants at a time when their livelihood is being threatened and deteriorated to the extreme.»
The passage of the bill occurred the same day, when President Donald trump said that next week the US will send «millions of illegal immigrants.»
The entry into force of the law required 180 days, that is, the first driver’s license will be issued in December.
