«They sent me to hell»: man mistakenly jailed for 82 days after his honey found methamphetamine

Man for a few months imprisoned, when CBP officers mistakenly believed that the honey he was carrying was drugs.

Last Christmas the father of six children of Leon Haughton , was returning home after he visited family in Jamaica. At some point in the Baltimore Washington Airport dogs started sniffing his things. The man was sure that they just smelled food from KFC, which was in his Luggage.

He was shocked when customs officers and border guards seized three bottles of honey, which he drove from his home in Jamaica.

«I saw, as they approached, they handcuffed me and took me out of the suitcase, then I said, «what’s the problem?»», recalls Haughton.

According to the CBP, of Haughton was arrested after honey showed a positive result for drugs.

«They said I was accused of [storage] meth — claimed the victim. — I said, «What is methamphetamine?»»

Because of the confusion in its status as holder of a green card, his situation had further deteriorated. Fortunately, the second test in the laboratory of Georgia showed that the honey was not drugs. The charges eventually were dropped.

«My children were very stressed, my mother is all stressed Haughton. They sent me to hell.»

The man was in prison in Maryland for 82 days and lost two jobs.

«As soon as I came out, all my insurance is gone, my credit history was ruined, I lost my job, everything was in chaos,» said Haughton.

According to the man, after this incident, he is afraid to travel. On the question of who is to blame in this situation, the Prosecutor’s office stated that «none of the agencies have not made mistakes».
