The famous photograph was taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt on 14 August 1945, V-J Day, when Japan surrendered to the United States. Characters pictures became George mendonsa and Greta Zimmer Friedman in a nurse uniform, who then worked as a dental assistant.

The photo, which has become a classic, was not staged. Young people do not see that they are removed.

Upon learning of the surrender of Japan, Eisenstadt came to the times square and started taking pictures of cheering bystanders. The photographer noticed the sailor who ran up to all women, circling them in the dance, and then kiss on the lips. When in his arms was a nurse in a white coat, Eisenstaedt took a picture.

«It was a moment, when we returned from the Pacific, the war ended, told mendonsa in 2012, at CBS News, I haven’t seen the photographer. I had a few drinks then to celebrate. So when I saw the nurse, I grabbed her and kissed».
