US threatens «the strongest sanctions in history» against Iran

The newly elected Secretary of state Mike Pompeo said that the United States will announce «the most powerful sanctions in history» against Iran if the country does not agree to the demands of America.

A week passed from the moment when Donald trump announced a unilateral US withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran. The President has taken this step, despite the fact that the French leader Emmanuel macron came to visit him for a personal meeting in the White house, to dissuade.

As said one of the sources familiar with this issue, such decision was accepted in connection with refusal of Iran to curtail the nuclear fuel production after 2030.

European countries-representatives of the nuclear agreement, France, Britain and Germany — are working to find ways that would have encouraged Iran not to abandon nuclear Treaty, even after the withdrawal of Washington.

Today (may 21) Pompeo demanded Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions, to curtail its program of ballistic missiles and to stop the expansion.

«The bite of sanctions will only hurt more if the regime will not deviate from the unacceptable and counterproductive path that he chose for himself and for the people of Iran,» said Pompeo in his first thoroughly prepared speech as Secretary of state, on international relations.

According to Pompeo, the US is also demanding the return of all Iranian troops from Syria, where they fight on the side of President Bashar al-Assadwho oppose the coalition forces led by the United States.

This statement may lead to even more severe escalation of the conflict between Washington and Tehran.

Previously known for his anti-Iranian stance Pompeo has repeatedly called on the people of Iran disagree with the policy pursued by President Hassan Rouhani and foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif.
