Building on Park Avenue will be the tallest in the world, to be condemned

The headquarters of J. P. Morgan Chase 270 Park Avenue will be demolished to make way for a new skyscraper.

To demolish a huge building in Manhattan is not so simple. First you need to pass all bureaucratic procedures. The Bank announced its plans to demolish last year. But just this month, J. P. Morgan filed an application for the demolition of the 707-foot building (216 m) in the center of the city.

It was designed and built in the 1960-ies Gordon Bunshaft and Natalie de Blois for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. 50 years, the skyscraper was the champion and was the tallest building designed by a female architect.

The new building, which will be built on the site of the demolished will be higher. 70-storey skyscraper will accommodate 15 000 potential employees, which is significantly more than the current occupying 52 floors and accommodates up to 6 000 employees.

Once the application is approved, and the headquarters on Park Avenue demolished, she will officially become the tallest demolished building in the world. By the way, all of the 10 tallest demolished buildings were in the Big Apple. First place at the moment is the new York Singer Building height of 612 feet, which was demolished in 1968.

In his statement, J. P. Morgan explained that the demolition is necessary because the building is out of date — because originally it was intended to accommodate only 3,500 employees.

The demolition process expected to complete by the end of 2020. According CityReality, the construction of a new building (which will last until approximately 2024) will create over 8 000 jobs. The new skyscraper, designed by Foster & Partners, can become one of the highest in the United States.
