$15 billion investment: Micron wants to make more chips in the US

Micron Technologies is one of the largest chip manufacturers in the United States. However, at the moment the company produces only about 10% of its products at home.

Now this should change. Groundbreaking is already planned for a new plant in Idaho, where the company is headquartered. $15 billion is allocated for the construction of the enterprise.

In the future, it should produce DRAM chips that can be used in data centers and home PCs. When the new plant is completed, about 40% of production will come from the US. According to Reuters, the plant will start operating in 2025.

Most Micron chips are now made in Asian countries such as Japan, Taiwan and Singapore. The construction of a new plant in the US is not a departure from these countries, stressed the head of the company Sanjay Mehrotra.
He refers to the «Chip and Science Act» issued by President Biden to promote chip production in the US. Overall, this rule provides chipmakers with $52 billion in support. Micron says the new plant will create 2,000 jobs by the end of the decade.

In total, Micron plans to invest $150 billion in production by 2030. $40 billion of them should stay in the USA. Part of the investment is for research and development, but new factories are also planned.

In addition to subsidizing chip makers, the US is doing even more to keep production in its own country. Nvidia and AMD now need a special license if they want to sell chips to China or Russia.
