Statistics: the sharp rise of STDs in new York

The Department of health of new York reported that the number of carriers of some sexually transmitted infections have doubled in one year. New statistics also shows which areas have experienced the greatest number of infections.

The dramatic spread of disease forced the local government to allocate funds for a new marketing campaign that encourages new Yorkers to get tested for STIs (formerly known as sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs). Statistics for 2015-2016, published on Thursday, showed an increased incidence of:

  • syphilis: 27% (for a total of 1939 cases for 2016)
  • gonorrhea: 18% among men (19 029 cases for 2016)
  • chlamydia: 6% (a total of 66 748 cases for 2016)

The Department of health said that 94% of patients with syphilis and 3/4 patients with gonorrhea men. In the area of highest risk are men who have sex with other men. But women still have the highest rates of chlamydia.

«Intensive spread of sexually transmitted infections is a disturbing national trend, which is heavily influenced by this city,» said Dr. Mary Bassett. A new city campaign called «Bare It All» and will include advertisements on the basis of emoji at bus stops, in subways and social networks. The new Yorkers urged to speak openly with your doctors and to be tested regularly — either at the doctor’s office or sexual health clinics throughout the city.

Here are some statistics on the territorial distribution of infections:

  • In Manhattan there are districts with the highest rates of syphilis: Chelsea, Central Harlem and Washington heights.
  • In the list of neighborhoods with the highest rates of chlamydia are Croton and Mott haven in the Bronx and Central Harlem
  • Among the neighborhoods with the highest rates of gonorrhea are highlighted Chelsea and Central Harlem in Manhattan and crown heights in Brooklyn.

In fact, the indicators of gonorrhoea decreased by 4% among women from 2015 to 2016. Now in new York are eight sexual health clinics which operate Monday to Friday and Saturday hours in the areas of riverside and Fort Greene.
