De Blasio: «new York will not demolish the monuments in the near future»

As you know, on the eve of parade in honor of Columbus Day the Indians appealed to the mayor of new York with the requirement to demolish all the monuments to Columbus for his unworthy treatment of the indigenous peoples of the United States. The protesters went ahead and created a petition with a proposal to rename Columbus Day to Day of indigenous peoples (Indigenous People’s Day).

As reported by DNAinfo, today bill de Blasio said that «nobody will take down any monuments in the nearest future», at least during the parade for Columbus Day.

«These issues come up year after year. And we are not talking about any historical figure or about one fact. We are talking about everything in the history of our country, therefore, the issue deserves thorough discussion and study. I think a Commission is a way of solving the problem, with which we will move forward, this is the right thing,» said the mayor. He also said that he hoped to hear all sides of the conflict and the Commission’s recommendations. «I’m open to compromise,» said De Blasio.

Hearing this answer, the protesters struck the mayor with criticism.

«We chose the man who defends the interests of the people of this city,» said 60-year-old Anza Santoro.
