«The family Manson»: how a serial killer managed to gather a group of faithful followers?

Died yesterday, probably the most famous and terrifying killer of the twentieth century, Charles Manson. What is known about him and how he managed to push a few people to violent murder?

Manson was born November 12, 1934 in a single-parent family. His mother, 16-year-old Kathleen Maddox ran away from home, and his own father he never knew. When Charles was 5, his mother was put in jail for robbing a gas station.

As reported by the NY Times, with 12 years Manson was in several correctional institutions. There he started to show its rigidity, for example, in one of these schools he grabbed the student, held him by the throat razor and raped him.

As a child, he often escaped from prisons and was engaged in robberies and stealings of cars. Since the mid-1950s years, Manson has continued to engage in criminal activity, which has been in prison for about 10 years and was released in 1967.

Then Manson moved to the district of Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco during the Summer of love — a cultural phenomenon created by hippies.

From that moment began the formation of the»Manson Family». He came up with his own philosophy that was a mix of Scientology, philosophy of the hippies, Beatles, tests from the book of Revelation and the writings of Hitler.

Getting a group of young hermits, he moved to Los Angeles in Death Valley, settling on a ranch Barker. There, members of the same commune, his followers staged an Orgy, used drugs and organized sacrifices.

Manson had ambitions of a musician, and he wanted to record an album. According to investigators, just the music and pushed the offender to the mass killings. In 1968 he released the album the Beatles «Halter, Skelter», whose name translates as the mess or fuss. Manson in his own interpretation of the lyrics, saying that they said about the beginning of the impending war on racial grounds.

This fact can be seen in his further crimes. In early August 1969, the leader of the group with the words «the Time has come, Helter Skelter,» he instructed his follower to go to the house where once lived the producer Terry Melcher, kill everyone, take the money and leave behind some sign. In this and subsequent killings of the members of the gang was leaving bloody inscription: «Pig» and «Helter, Skelter».

Members of a gang were detained after one of its members, Susan Atkins, who went to prison on another case, «boasted» of his cellmate, telling the brutal massacre of the «family».

June 15, 1970, Manson, Atkins and two other girls, Patricia Krenwinkel and Linda Kasabian, appeared before the court. Kasabian, who was not involved in the murders, became a witness for the prosecution and received immunity.

Each trial was for the members of the commune the reason for «performance». Once Manson left the judge in pencil, and another time he hit his lawyer. At some point, the killer appeared in court with an x carved in his forehead; his «girls» has quickly followed suit. Later he corrected X and swastika.

January 25, 1971, a jury found Manson, Atkins and Krenwinkel guilty of 7 murders. Another member of the commune, Leslie van Houten, which was only present during the murder of the couple Labanc, was found guilty on 2 counts. All four were also convicted of conspiracy to commit murder.

On March 29, all four defendants were sentenced to death. Later the punishment was cancelled, so the convicts received a life sentence.

For many years in prison, Manson spent his time playing guitar, doing erestartsys work and making of his socks Scorpions and spiders threads. His crimes made him a target for other prisoners: in 1984 Manson was treated for burns second and third degree after he set fire to the inmates.

In 1986, during an interview in prison, journalist Charlie rose asked a question about Manson murdered pregnant actress Sharon Tate: «So, you did not care?» What the offender said, «What the hell does it mean «worry»?

This statement, like most interviews with Manson, demonstrate that the offender is little known. Four decades later, no one was able to answer the question: «whether Manson is a paranoid schizophrenic or a sociopath, devoid of human feelings?»
