A former fertility doctor from Indiana who was accused of using own sperm to impregnate patients, pleaded guilty to perjury.
79-year-old Donald Klein initially told investigators that he had not impregnated his patients with their own sperm. But later in conversation with a man who could be his child, he admitted that he used his sperm. According to Klein, for all his years of practice he could do it about 50 times.
According to genetic testing to establish paternity, Klein retired in 2009, is the biological father ofat least two children of their patients. But there is speculation that about 20 people could be his children.
After recognizing Kline guilty of perjury in the investigation, judge Marion County retired appointed punishment in the form of years of imprisonment conditionally.
«Dr. Klein not only abused the full confidence of his patients, but his decision will have a lasting impact on the next generation of the affected families,» said Marion County Prosecutor, Terry Curry, after the verdict.
Despite the fact that the Indiana law does not prohibit doctors for infertility to use their own sperm, one of the former patients Klein, Liz Whyte, said that in her opinion, this issue should be considered by the court as a violation of the doctor’s ethics, but as a crime.
