Two blocks of Broadway closed to vehicles on summer

Pedestrians in downtown new York for the summer the city decided to create a little safe space that is closed to traffic.

Car traffic is banned in part of a pilot programme in two blocks of Broadway. The goal of the program is the creation of some pedestrian oases in the center of a crowded «urban jungle».

Traffic will be banned from 36th Street at 37th Street and 39th Street on 40th Street until September 1.

«We have the times square and Herald square, but there’s really no parks in the area, though every morning and evening on the Broadway and Seventh Avenue is a flow of people,» said Barbara Blair, President of the Garment District Alliance, collaborated with the Department of transport in the city in this project. «There is busy pedestrian traffic».

On the occasion the program is run on Broadway, a new «road tattoo» caused by the paint in the center of the pedestrian zone. Artwork designed by Steed Taylor in the form of several interwoven yellow tracks, called “sew-and-sew” and will contain the names of the tenants of the garment district who were in the area for at least two decades. There is also additional installed 19 birches and there are several pop-up shops and eateries.

Although the closure of the temporary quarters, Barbara Blair intends to speak before the city authorities with the initiative to complete overlap of the area and create a year-round pedestrian zone.
