Texas vs. Washington: migrant crisis and rumors of state secession

In the United States a serious crisis has emerged in connection with illegal migration. In recent years, the flow of migrants into the country has broken all records. According to data for December 2023, 10 thousand illegal immigrants crossed the southern border between the United States and Mexico per day. Most of them moved through Texas and Arizona. In the States, serious problems have arisen with accommodating migrants, providing them with humanitarian aid, medical care, etc.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been running Operation Lone Star alone since 2021. for border protection. With the help of its law enforcement agencies, the state is independently trying to stop the influx of illegal immigrants that have flooded all of Texas. The state National Guard has arrested 35,000 migrants and detained more than half a million people who crossed the border illegally. All this time, Washington did not react or intervene in the situation, and now the crisis broke out with renewed vigor. Read today in USA.ONE magazine:

What is happening in Texas and why is the capital against the measures being taken?

Meanwhile, states bordering Mexico are sounding the alarm, accusing the federal government of inaction, which is leading to an increase in crime and drug trafficking in the country. And Texas is even threatening to secede from the United States.

Recently, in the US state of Texas, acts of disobedience to the central government began on the issue of strengthening the border with Mexico. Tired of Washington's silence, the state independently began to close the borders from migrants, causing dissatisfaction with its actions in the capital.

Republican Governor Greg Abbott ordered police and the National Guard to patrol the cordon and tighten it with razor wire. The governors of 25 other Republican states took his side, including Wyoming, Idaho, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Louisiana, North Dakota, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio, South Carolina and others. The last time such unity and strong defiance of the federal government was observed was in the 19th century before the outbreak of the Civil War.

Texas security forces do not allow border guards subordinate to Washington to perform their duties because they often allow illegal immigrants through. Last year alone, 3 million migrants passed through Texas, most of whom settled in the state. In response to Abbott's actions, Joe Biden's government appealed to the Supreme Court, which ruled that the feds should be allowed to the border to remove the erected barriers. The governor of Texas refused to comply with the order, saying that the state has the right by law to control any point of its territory.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has accused the White House of conspiring with Mexican drug cartels to smuggle refugees across the United States border in a pay-per-person scheme. And the state's lieutenant governor, Dan Patrick, completely called on Biden to “get out of the way.” Meanwhile, Greg Abbott activated Article 1 of Section 10, Paragraph 3 of the US Constitution, which allows him to declare martial law in the state and act without regard to the feds. He said the president's actions had led to an «unprecedented invasion that must be defended against.»

Former US President Donald Trump, who is planning to run for office again this year, expressed his support for Texas. Thus, the border issue becomes one of the key ones in the presidential race, which is already expected to be very tense. By fighting illegal migration (a very sensitive topic for the United States), Republicans want to mobilize their electorate and weaken the Democrats and their main candidate Joe Biden. In addition, some Democratic voters also support strengthening the border with Mexico, which means the incumbent president loses points.

Currently, the entire National Guard is stationed on the Texas border, and Texans are planning to install even more barbed wire. Paxton said he doesn't know what Biden will do now, «but every decision he's made so far has been a bad decision for the United States.» Elon Musk also agrees with him, saying that “Texas is absolutely right, and the administration is specifically violating the law by encouraging illegal migration on an unprecedented scale.”

Meanwhile, illegal immigrants are being deported to liberal cities such as Chicago and New York, where the migration crisis is also worsening. And in Texas, calls for secession from the United States have already intensified. Leader of the "Texit" movement Daniel Miller recently tried to add a state independence question to the ballot in the Republican primary, and a referendum request was submitted to the Republican Party. With the minimum required 97 thousand votes, he received more than 139 thousand. The party authorities refused "Teksit", but Miller believes that the process of secession has still started.

In fact, no one will allow the state to break away. With a GDP of $1.8 trillion, Texas as a separate state could take 8th place in the list of world economies, ahead of Russia, Brazil, Spain, Australia and South Korea. This is one of the most important states for the US economy, the center of American oil production, ranking third in terms of volume in the world after the Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia. With a per capita GDP of $78,000, Texas is one of the best places on the planet to live, trade and do business.

So how did this situation even happen? The fact is that Joe Biden has not paid attention to the problem of illegal immigrants in the country for too long, on the contrary, softening immigration laws. According to some, this is how the Democrats tried to strengthen their electorate. Others believe that large corporations are interested in the Texas crisis and benefit from hiring cheap labor from Mexicans. There is a third version: Biden simply showed incompetence and disinterest in this issue. Now he understands that his decisions and actions could start a civil war, which in light of the election race he does not need at all. Therefore, for now the president is hesitating and allowing the situation to develop in his own way.

Meanwhile, the conflict is heating up. Much will depend on how the head of state behaves next. This may be Biden's last chance to win the trust of Americans and get the missing votes. Otherwise, the Republicans may come to power.
