The international symbol of new York is 40 years old

The iconic logo of the «I ❤ NY» created by American graphic designer Milton Glaser, was presented to the public exactly 40 years ago as part of an advertising campaign designed to convince tourists that new York is not as bad as it was shown in movies and the news.

Today minimalistic logo with a red heart is one of the most recognizable symbols of new York city around the world. It was created a year before his presentation, when Glazer was in a hurry for a business meeting. He hastily sketched the logo with four characters on the envelope in the car and later showed it to William Doyle from the Department of Commerce of the state of new York. On the first version of the letter was located differently, and the familiar appearance was inspired by the work of LOVE Robert Indiana.

At that time the project did not arouse much enthusiasm. Glazer, who initially said that the advertising campaign will last only a few months, agreed to work free of charge, very miscalculated. Today, the official products with the logo «I ❤NY» annually bring to the state millions, while Glaser does not get a penny of royalties.

But Glaser is not too upset about it. He says that the food is nice to see the logo on the streets, as it has for a very long time shows how new Yorkers treat their city. It displays pure, real emotion, and it’s worth it.
