Metro new York expects food ban?

After the incident with the fire that occurred on Monday, the transport Department of new York is considering a ban food in the subway.

The head of Joe Lhota on Wednesday said that management had begun discussions on what foods can be considered «relevant» in the subway, and also on how to train passengers to behave appropriately. He does not exclude that food will be banned at all.

It is unknown what foods and drinks can fall under the ban. However Lhota approved snacks, which is a bit rubbish.

«We need to decide what works better,» he said, adding that instead of a ban, you can try to run «training program» that would explain how best food to bring on the subway. Such a strategy has already been adopted by the Department of transportation southeastern Pennsylvania. There are encouraging the use of «light snacks» instead of ready fast food.

Some cities have solved the question more radically. For example, in Washington the consumption of food and drinks in subway cars and on the platforms is strictly prohibited.

The food ban is contrary to the position Lhoty on the same subject, which he voiced in the past. In 2012, when he first headed the Department, in an interview with «new York times» Lhota said that such a ban «will hurt some sectors of society.»

Andrew albert, a member of the Board of transportation of new York, said he sees the sense in banning products in the name of cleanliness at stations, but as Lhota, I would like to reach a compromise.

«We don’t want fires in the subway, to the people left in cars food attracting rodents,» said albert. «Eating foods that cause problems, but not candy or granola».
