Mother of four from Norwalk, who has lived in the United States for 24 years, refuses to deportation and does not want to return to Guatemala.
Nuri Chavarria left his native Guatemala in 1993, when she was 19, and had petitioned for asylum in the United States. She refused, but she still remained.
Now Chavarria, seeking refuge in the Church Iglesia De Dios Pentecostal on East pearl Street in new haven, because immigration officers can’t arrest her while she is in the territory of the Church property.
Since 2011 it checked every year the US immigration service. And every year she received permission to remain in the United States.
Chavarria have no criminal record, she works as a housekeeper and pays taxes. It is believed that these factors will enable her to stay in the United States, despite the fact that the administration of President Donald trump has concentrated its efforts on the deportation of illegal immigrants.
That all changed in June when representatives of the immigration service said that five weeks later she needs to leave the country.
Chavarria put ICE on the leg bracelet that monitors her movement. Meanwhile, her 9-year-old daughter has a request for President Trump.
«Please allow my mother to stay. She has four children, and I am one of them. I really want her to stay with us,» said Haley Chavarria.
A lawyer of new haven Glenn Formica and a group of activists-volunteers Connecticut Shoreline Indivisible took matters Chavarria under control.
«It’s just inhuman. You need to change something,» said Charla Nich of the Connecticut Shoreline Indivisible.
When NBC Connecticut asked for comments to the immigration service in this case, they made the following statement:
«Nuri Chavarria was allowed to voluntarily leave the United States in 1998, but she did not, as a result, in 1999 she was ordered to leave the country. In 2010, the Service has postponed the deportation of one year compassionate.
Now the Service has allowed her to remain free from detention. We will continue to closely monitor its business to ensure compliance with the regulations.»
On Tuesday the request of Chevarri to stay in the U.S. was rejected. State Governor Dannel Malloy visited the Church on Thursday, and then said that the situation in Connecticut says the failure of immigration policy in Washington.
He said that the only thing that can help her staff to support her.
