City hall plans to rebuild Steinway Street to make one of the most popular places for shopping in Astoria more pedestrian-friendly, said mayor bill de Blasio.
«I know that Steinway Street mere headache. The Department of transportation will develop a new design to make the street safer and more comfortable for pedestrians,» said De Blasio.
The mayor has not announced any further details about the plan, but noted that ultimately it will be presented to the public. It should be noted that only in 2016 38 people (including 11 pedestrians) were injured in road accidents along Steinway Street between 28th and 35th Avenues.
On the change project street insisted a member of the city Council of the city of new York Costa constantinides. Official advocates the establishment of a Park or pedestrian area along Steinway Street, as well as adding there intermediate pedestrian crossings.
«Buyers should be able to more easily and safely cross the street, running around the shops. Besides, after the reconstruction, the residents will get a nice bonus in the form of beautiful view on Steinway Street,» said Konstantinidis.
In city hall reported that the project plan updated represent the streets in 2018.
