Why Russia banned the French-British Comedy «Death of Stalin»?

Council under the Ministry of culture of Russia has cancelled the release of the film «Stalin’s Death», filmed by Scottish satirist and Director Armando Inanci. The main argument was that, in the opinion of the members of the Department, many Russians think the tape is an insult to the Soviet past of the Russian Federation.

Representatives of the Ministry of culture held a special preview of the French-British film, which is characteristic of the Director’s satire and black humour. Officials felt that the film has no historical and cultural values. Then the Minister of culture of the Russian Federation Vladimir Medinsky sent a letter asking to withdraw the movie from the rental.

Why Russia banned the French-British Comedy «Death of Stalin»?

«Many older people, and not just perceive it as insulting mockery of the Soviet past, the country that defeated fascism, and on simple people, and even worse, even the victims of Stalinism,» said Medina after receiving a number of complaints.

According to the Minister, representatives of the Department said the distributor of the film, that it was inappropriate to release the film on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the battle of Stalingrad, which killed more than a million soldiers. The battle that took place under modern Volgograd (up to 1961 Stalingrad), was one of the biggest battles during the second world war.

The film is not left out of the scandal, which revolved around the film in Russia. Inanci noted that many Russians, including Russian journalists, praised the film. According to the satirist, the Russians mostly commented on the film: «It’s funny, but it’s true.»

The «Death of Stalin» is based on the eponymous French comic book, sponsored by Fabienne Nuri and Thierry Robin. The story unfolds after the death of the General Secretary of the Communist party of Joseph Stalin in 1953. Among the close to leader of the Soviet Union begins the confrontation in the struggle for power, leading to the present chaos in the country.

As transfers TV network ABC, despite the recognition of Stalin responsible for the death of millions of Soviet citizens, the Soviet leader in Russia is still associated with the greatest achievements of the country.
