Vesuvius in the fire: in Italy burn the slopes of an active volcano

In Italy a large-scale fire swept the slopes of mount Vesuvius. The fire rages for several days. Huge plumes of toxic smoke rose into the sky, threatening the inhabitants of Naples, located just 15 kilometers from the volcano. Authorities decided to evacuate the residents of their homes.

It was initially reported that the fire was the result of awakening «sleeping» since 1944, the volcano, however, now police say that the fire could be the result of human activity.

Firefighters continue to fight fires, but they can’t extinguish the flames completely, as the fire continues to spread on the grass and dead trees. If it will not be able to stop in the near future, the emissions of toxic smoke from the burning slopes can be distributed in a large territory.

Vesuvius famous for its eruption on 24 August 79 ad. Then the lava destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae, resulting in killing thousands of people.
