The fire almost destroyed one of the oldest synagogues in new York

The fire raged on Sunday in the Lower East side almost destroyed the historic building vacant synagogue.

In the FDNY said that the fire started in the synagogue Beth-Hamedrash-HaGadollocated at 60 Norfolk St. about 7 o’clock in the evening. In place immediately profit 140 firefighters and 33 units of fire equipment.

To get the flames under control only managed to 8.50 PM. Some parts of the facade was burned to the ground. Fortunately, none of the civilians during the incident were not injured. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The synagogue in question was built in 1850 year and closed in 2007, the year after the fire that destroyed the roof and some supporting structures.

Since 2013, actively calls for demolition of the structure, but to any result they failed.

Beth-Hamedrash-HaGadol was recognized as the oldest Russian Jewish Orthodox congregation in the country.
