Over the next three months, an unknown attacker 5 times stole the flag, purposefully tearing down the hated symbols. The pastor even tried to find a thief with a common language, placing one of these days the message of peace right next to the checkbox selected. It reads as follows: «It was an act of fear. It was an act of hatred. Do you realize that? Such actions have nothing to do with the good. They only harm. Instead of repeating their actions better talk to us. We are ready to dialogue.»

However, a compromise could not be found. The offender ignored the message and continued to harm the Church. The case was assigned to the police, who established a nearby surveillance camera. Soon, the gunman got a video which clearly shows how he rips off the flag.

The attacker was 21-year-old Ronald Tyler Vitt living a few blocks from Sayville Congregational United Church of Christ. The suspect’s lawyer insists that the act his client was the usual joke.

However, the police reminded the man in communion with the officers said that they «didn’t want to see the symbol of gays in the Church». The court found for the suspect bail in the amount of $12 thousand and was obliged, in the event of payment, to wear a GPS bracelet.
