A report of a shooting near a chemistry lab in the center of the University of North Carolina campus was received by 911 around 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 28. It was reported that several shots were fired in Chapel Hill, resulting in the death of a teacher. Law enforcement officers immediately responded to the call.

According to the chief of the local police department, Brian James, one of the teachers was the victim of a shooting.

"Such incidents undermine safety and trust, which we often take for granted," he said.

Students and faculty barricaded themselves in classrooms and dormitories after a police warning of "an armed and dangerous person on or near campus". Some students were seen jumping from the windows of the university building. There were no reports of possible injuries.

The suspect was apprehended an hour and a half later, and the university campus was blocked for more than three hours while the police unsuccessfully searched for the murder weapon. The identity of the deceased has not yet been revealed. The attacker's motives are also unknown. Police said it was not yet clear if the shooter and his victim knew each other.

The media identified the suspect as Tailei Qi, a graduate student at the University of North Carolina who also studied physics at Wuhan University in China and received a master's degree from Louisiana State University in 2021.

At Chapel Hill, the oldest public university in USA, about 30 thousand students study. After the incident, all events the next day were canceled, and the head of the educational institution expressed "shock and sadness" in his address.

The Pew Research Center analytical center cites statistics according to which 60% of US residents believe that it is too easy to acquire firearms in the States. According to the Gun Violence Archive, 25,000 people have been victims of shootings in America since the beginning of 2023. In the first half of the year alone, 421 cases of mass shooting were recorded, 28 of which were qualified as massacres.
