The fire destroyed only the vegetation — damage to infrastructure and casualties among the local inhabitants managed to escape, however, five homes had to be evacuated as a precaution. Tourists urged to leave the area, and traffic on Mandeville Canyon road blocked.

To stop the spread of fire took the efforts of 150 firefighters, a large number of ground vehicles and a helicopter.

At 18:13 in the fire Department said the fire is localized, but completely extinguish it still failed. Crews will remain in place and will work on this task over the next 36 hours.

According to preliminary data the fire arose from-for imprudence when attempts by local residents to burn the weeds.

To avoid such incidents in the future, firefighters urge the public

  • to abandon the weed control with fire, especially in the hottest hours;
  • to limit the use of tools with metal blades, which can cause sparks when in contact with hard objects;
  • to keep the fire extinguishers or garden hoses.
