The landlord of the Queens asked the tenants to confirm immigration status

The attorney General of the state of new York is investigating another abuse on the part of the lessor. Landlord of the Queens demanded from tenants to confirm their immigration status under threat of eviction.

Residents of the house on 42nd Avenue and Junction Boulevard in Corona say their landlord posted on the door of the house message, in which he asks the tenants to extend the rental period to confirm your immigration status. The report said that if residents do not fulfill the requirements, the landlord may terminate the lease and evict them.

State Senator Jose Peralta, who filed a complaint to the Prosecutor General, calling a fact a violation of the laws on human rights.

«New York- a city of refuge and immigrants are in fear,» said Peralta. «Why go after these people and ask them about the proof of immigration status to renew the lease, when in fact all they need to provide is the ID with photo or letter of employment that confirms their identity».

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that he is launching a new public campaign to educate landlords and tenants of their rights and responsibilities.
