January 1, new Yorkers can specify a third gender in birth certificates

From 1 January 2019, the citizens of new York can indicate in the birth certificates that they are gender neutral. On Tuesday, the state enacted a law that allows its residents to choose a third option of «X».

To change the gender on the birth certificate genderqueers do not need to provide a medical report — simply submit a written request, specifying a preferred gender.

«The Department of health recognizes that the specified floor some people may not match their gender identity,» says the mayor of new York.

«Transgender and gender nonconformal residents of new York deserve the right to choose how to identify themselves and live with respect and dignity. This brave new policy in the struggle for equality makes our city more equitable for all,» said new York mayor bill De Blasio.

Supported the bill, and the health Commissioner of new York Oksiris barbeau.

«By offering an atypical variant and less burdensome way to change your gender in the birth certificate, the city is moving in the right direction towards full equality for the residents of new York, which historically was taken to ignore,» said barbeau.

Similar legislation that allows citizens to Express their gender-neutral birth certificates, has already taken the States of California, Oregon, and Washington. New Jersey will follow suit in February.
