Today new York is one of 43 States where waiters, bartenders, employees of nail salons, car washing and other service workers receive wages below the minimum, provided that the tips were their income reaches the minimum allowed.

Public institutions — including the ROC has repeatedly appealed to Governor Cuomo asking him to support One Fair Wage that would allow a full minimum wage new Yorkers who rely on tips. According to human rights activists, it would not only significantly reduced the number of thefts among employees, but would also help to deal with harassment — particularly sexual — workplace. Their opponents, in turn, claim that such a decision would be bad for restaurants, forcing owners to cut staff and raise prices on food.

Ocasio-Cortez, to win the election in the Congress who worked in a Mexican bar Fix Flats near Union Square, highlights that the issue of minimum wage goes well beyond the workers in the restaurant industry. In her district, which includes the Bronx and Queens is one of the highest concentrations of nail salons in the country. According to ROC, the majority of them are women-immigrants.

«When we talk about those who depend on tips, they usually think about the waiters and bartenders. — said the Congresswoman tweeted last summer — But there are more people <…>. One of the fastest growing sectors of the economy relying on low wages and inhuman working conditions, which, in turn, lead to the harassment of staff».

Currently the minimum wage in NY is $15 per hour, in that time, the tipped employees earn only $10. However, even this is above the Federal standard of the minimal wage — $7.25 per hour, which Raise the Wage would increase by half by 2024.
