August 15, deputies arrested the mother and grandmother after they discovered a 16-day newborn on the floor of their van.
Representatives of the office of the Sheriff of the County of Laurel (Kentucky) stopped Chrysler Town & Country two miles North of London. During the stop, they learned that two women in the car — the driver of Charolette George. Simpson (69) and passenger Rebecca Jean Fultz (32) — issued arrest warrants.
According to deputies, after 10 minutes, Simpson told them that the minivan has a child. Sheriff’s deputies found the car seat, but couldn’t find the baby. Finally they found a newborn baby who was 16 months, on the floor between the two front seats. According to the Sheriff’s office, the baby had a dirty diaper, it was crawling with ants, and the van had no air conditioning. Also the baby «had trouble breathing».
«I think it’s luck that we were there to come to the aid of that child, said Sheriff’s Deputy Gilbert of Accardo WKYT. — It was a very difficult situation, to say the least».
Later, Fultz told WKYT that her son was all right. Law enforcement authorities stated that «throughout the car was filled with garbage and different things, including a flat screen TV, which could easily tip over in the car during a sudden stop».
