In California during a pandemic coronavirus can provide financial assistance to illegal immigrants

Tuesday, April 7, the Governor of California Gavin Newsom said that he and the legislature of the state considering financial aid to undocumented immigrants, who are not entitled to unemployment benefits provided by the Federal stimulus package.

Newsome has not provided specific details when asked about it at a press conference at COVID-19, but confirmed that this issue is among various economic strategies, which are studied by the legislators.

A group of more than 125 organizations representing California workers in late March sent the Governor a letter asking to «fill the gaps» in the protection of workers who are not eligible for Federal assistance during a pandemic.

«Yes, this issue is addressed, said Newsome when asked about providing assistance to undocumented immigrants. Is part of a broader package, in which I’ll be making some significant adjustments. I just can’t wait for the Federal government do it for us.»

Workers who do not have social security numbers, submit taxes through the so-called individual taxpayer identification number. According to CNN, in 2015, such taxes amounted to more than $13,6 billion.

However, candidates who want to apply for Federal unemployment benefits, must have a Federal work permit.

According to the Institute on taxation and economic policy, in California , illegal immigrants contribute about $3 billion in local taxes and state taxes.

In the County of Los Angeles , illegal immigrants are not eligible for unemployment insurance, but may qualify for disability insurance and paid family leave.
